Hammerhead caught

  1. This is really sad.

    According to MyFOXTampaBay:

"Fritz Van Der Grifd was fishing off of Singer Island in Palm Beach County when he snagged the shark, which he says he never intended to kill. He just wanted to get its picture, MyFOXTampaBay reports, but the shark died during the struggle."

    Even more disturbing.

I have always wondered if many sport fisherman also dive. My guess is that they probably are not divers, otherwise they probably would not be fisherman!

    Any thoughts about this?

  2. Just horrible! A magnificent female great hammerhead (at least looks like it to me....)

Saw the guy "Fritz" interviewed on Bay News 9 just now. The only good thing was he actually felt he had to make "excuses" for killing the shark. This is in sharp contrast to the jerk who killed the record holding great hammerhead off Boca Grande on the West Coast of Florida here. That guy was quoted in the papers as doing mankind a favor, making the waters safer! (Sometimes I'm embarrassed to say I even live in Florida.....)

So while still horrid, "Fritz" did make excuses so feels some pangs or public pressure of guilt. Let's keep up the pressure and make it illegal to hunt these lovely sharks during when they are in Florida in abundance, chasing tarpon and other food sources.

As least this news link on Tampa Bay's 10 says the shark was not a man-eater (small victory for sure but something! But it is disgusting how they tie it up with mouth open.....) I've been near one of these huge specimens in the wild without baiting or anything and they are incredible!!!!!..., yes Jeff - soooo sad:

  3. Quote taken from the tampabays10.com website

“But the creature was injured in the fight and became exhausted and drowned.â€

Pray tell, exactly how does a fish drown in water???

Looks like stupidity compounded by even more stupidity. :)
