Which lens to use underwater?

  1. I have been using a Ikelite Housing with a Nikon D70 & 18-70mm lens for the past few years - Recently I purchased a D-300 with 18-135 mm lens - I do not intend to change my underwater setup but have a question whether to change to the 18-135 mm lens on my D-70 - Is it worth It? - Thanks Jim K

Just looking at the extended range in focal length on the long end, what benefit will that give you? I wouldn't think that going to 135mm would be of any use underwater (unless it has macro capabilities). The other issue you're going to have is the length of the lens and the ability to put a port around it. Is it even possible? Is the throw of the lens going to prevent you from using the full range of the lens?

It doesn't seem to me that the 18-135 will bring any benefit to the table. Unless it's a matter of image quality (I don't know the 18-135mm lens in this regard), I wouldn't bother.

  3. The 18-135 optics aren't as good as the 18-70. I would recommend buying a Nikkor 60mm macro lens. It is fast, sharp and cheap. The 60 covers both macro and is a good focal length for fish portraits.
