Question about z240 focus light

3 posts
  1. I just recently purchased a z240. I'll have it in a pool to practice next week, but haven't been out with it yet. The manual suggests using a red filter on aiming light. Do many of you do routinely do this? I am guessing I will use a diffuser for macro and fish portraits so it would be easy enough to use the clip in filter.

Thanks for your thoughts on this.

  2. I have it mounted as well.

It is supposed to disturb fishes less with the red filter mounted. I have not really seen any downside so far. So, it is still mounted.

  3. The red filter on the modelling light is meant to prevent the light spot interfering with pre-flash TTL strobe control. It's pretty irrelevant underwater, in my experience.

Using the modelling light as a focus light doesn't work, because the best strobe angles don't put the modelling light on the lens axis. Better to use a focus light mounted above the lens and on-axis.

The intensity of the modelling light is such that, with a filter attached, it's difficult to see much detail in the dark. The blue filter is a little better than the red for revealing what the strobe is shining at.
