A NEW/UPDATED Canon 5D II (Rumor)

Looks very nice; so many nice cameras out there!

Well, if the rumor is true (cough cough) that would be very nice :-)
Of course, I hope it will fit in my 5D housing - whatever they come up with.
Cheers

It's very unlikely that it'll fit without modifications. I don't think they can put in a 3" LCD in place of the current 2.5" LCD without at least moving some buttons around.

While I won't be in the market for the new 5D (that's what I tell myself now!), we do have to ask ourselves, which buttons do we really need UW? Menu? Most serious shooters (and you must be pretty serious to invest in a DSLR rig) use RAW, stick in a large (8gigs gets me over 400 images with my 5D) CF card and you don't need the delete button as much. I shoot in Manual mode all the time, so I don't even touch the Mode Dial. So far, most Canons retain the same top button geometry for changing ISO, AF even focus points. I program the SET button for image playback and set INFO to display histogram and small image preview...even on the small window of my 10D housing, the RGB/L histogram of the 40D is visible, as well as the small thumbnail. As long as the shutter, Main and Quick Control dial are usable, that's pretty much all you'd need. What I found nice is that I now have a standard set of controls for my 2 DSLRs that fit in my Subal 10D housing.
If the 5D replacement were to come out at $3k, the next line of housings will be at least that, more if you go higher end... I'd love to be able to afford the latest and greatest, but even then, are we so used to a disposable society that a 5-6 thousand dollar purchase is to be considered disposable? Luckily, I don't yet feel the need for a magnified VF.

Looks nice and 90MP/sec is a lot for a compact body (though not unprecedented), but with Sony introducing a smaller body with 24MP soon I wonder how long Canon can afford to short the resolution of the 5D to protect the 1Ds. Are there really 3 different resolution points? Is splitting the resolution difference really the best approach for a small FF body? Considering linear resolution is only increased 9%, I'd rather see 18MP and 5fps myself. Of course, this is only dpreview speculation and Canon may be taking its time to determine the best course of action. The 5D is still unique but won't be before long and I'd think Canon would want to differentiate the 5D2 more from the D300s and similar.

You're right about not needing those buttons underwater. However, I think it's likely that they'll end up moving quite a few things around to make room for the larger LCD and put in live view.
I wouldn't say a magnified VF is a need. I'm fortunate to still have close to 20/20 vision. However, I wouldn't trade mine for all the new 5D II features on that list.

I had lasik a few years ago and am 20/15 in each eye, yet in the last year I've developed some presbyopia because it's that time for me. I shot for the first time recently with the magnified Subal finder and wasn't sure I liked it. Previous to that I did not prefer the Seacam finders because they were too heavy. Now that I have to replace my rig, I'm really unsure whether I should go for the big finder and adjust to it or take the smaller, lighter, cheaper finder. I found that I frequently backed far off the big finder and it worked well. Using a non-magnified finder was never a problem for me.

If it's the same live view found in the 40D, they can keep it. While useful for topside studio work on a tripod...maybe the occasional far off bird with a long lens, I've yet to find any good use for Live View. The 40D has had a lot of stuff moved, and it was specifically those buttons that I mentioned are now on the lower edge of the screen instead of to the left of the LCD. Didn't miss them at all...as long as you remember to preset the buttons.
The Sony sounds like it has great specs, I'm just curious who will make a housing, Ike probably but I would doubt the others would. None of the others are making housings for Oly.

I agree that housings for the Sony are unlikely any time soon, but market pressure from them may improve models that we actually can house. :-)

just wondering --has anyone heard anything new on this? Is the 5d II out?

At this point it appears it was a completely unfounded rumor. You may notice that the original link wasn't to something official from DPReview, just a forum post.
