40D in 20D housing

4 posts
  1. Im currently looking at a 20D housing that is FS and had question that popped in my head. I currently have a 20D but will be getting a 40D in just a couple of months (unless the new 5D mk II makes a appearence).

The housing im gonna get is a subal C20, and i was wondering could i put the 40D into the 20D housing. Yes i know about the button and LCD differences, but could i buy the back half of the 40D housing and get everything to fit or is there much more to this that makes this totally not possible(like button placement on the front half of the housing)?

    Thanks in advance.

  2. i've been using a 20D in Aquatica housing for a couple years. i also have a 40D. there are a number of subtle dimensional differences between the 20D and the 40D and the controls are quite different -- in short, no way. although i wish it were otherwise

i can't really complain about the images from my 20D, but the small viewfinder is a real annoyance

if you can get a good price (which you should) on a good 20D housing with ports (not ikelite), consider picking up a second backup body (as i have) and dedicating the whole thing to UW.

i think it's really important to define your UW goals and do all the numbers before making a decision. fortunately there are more choices now, and from my macro experience i'd certainly insist on TTL flash when i replace my present gear

  3. I've got both the Subal C40 and C20 housings along with their respective cameras at home. I'll have a play around with the 40D in the C20 housing and the C40 back on the C20 housing front and get back to you after the weekend with how things went.

The 20D and C20 along with a couple of ports and other bits and pieces are for sale if you're interested. It's in the classified sections here as a package but I'm willing to break it up.

  4. Just had a play with the 40D and the Subal C20 housing for the 20D. With the 40D on the baseplate for the C40 housing:

    • The 40D will physically fit inside the housing
    • The 40D won't slide fully into the housing because the clear plastic window over the mode dial is too long (a bit of surgery would fix this)
    • The four buttons on top of the housing go very close to matching up with the buttons on the camera (only a small adjustment should be required)
    • I couldn't check the front dial and shutter release alignment because of the problem with the camera not fully sliding into the housing but it looks like they're not too far off being in the right place; and
    • The 40D camera lens is slightly off centre with the port on the housing

I also tried the back off the C40 housing on the C20 housing and it fits no problem.

Therefore with a custom base plate and some minor modifications to the C20 housing controls it looks like using a 40D is possible if you can purchase a C40 back on its own.
