I am hoping to buy my first housing this easter. I have a Canon 1dMkIIN and would like to buy a housing BUT was wondering if it would be cheaper to buy an ikelite housing for another camera such as the 40d or 400d (and buy the camera aswell!). Are ikelite housings good? why are they cheaper?
Im never planning on going to go more than 20/30m probably. currently i have no wide angle lenses and would need to either get one for the 1D or the 40/400D.
would be really grateful for some advice

Ikelite have good products. They are cheaper because they are made out of plastic, compared to more expensive housings made out of aluminium. The aluminium housings tend to be more rugged and also more compact in size (better for packing/transporting). Then the finnish detail and 'feel' in controls and buttons vary, usually corresponding to the price tag. Then, for americanos, you have to take weak$ into the picture (Ike is US-made).

Right now you can pick up a used housing for the MkIIn for about $3,000 plus you'll need to buy accessories.
You can guy a 40D + ultra-wideangle (12-24) and housing for about the same price.

If its the same price, I would go with the 40d + housing...only so I would have a backup camera and I wouldn't be diving with my primary camera.
