Upgrading from Compact to DSLR

  1. OK - I am finally going to make the jump from compact to DSLR - I have approx US$800 to spend on my camera - so what should I go for?

     

    I am edging towards the Nikon D40 or D60 for no other reason than I like Nikon!

     

    I am based in the islands - not the easy to get stuff to, or from islands, the out in the back of beyond islands, so I need a reliable, hard wearing, not going to throw a hissy fit if it gets a little humid whilst shooting in the jungle camera.

     

    Your advice greatly appreciated!

     

    (As would an individual who would be willing to visit St. Vincent and bring me my new baby so I dont have to pay the 100% import duty! :D )
