Canon OEM Housing O Rings

  1. I know this has probably been discussed but I would rather be safe than sorry. I order a Canon housing for my 870 and it was shipped with the O ring on it. I don't think that I saw anything saying that it should not be stored on the unit. I thought I heard other people saying that they take it off when they are not using it, How do you store it? Do you fold it up and put it inside the housing?

    Thanks in Advance,

  2. Aaron, The manual states to store the housing unlatched so the o-ring doesn't get compressed. I personally remove the o-ring and grease it, place it in a bag (not folded) waiting for our next trip. Before I travel I replace the o-ring and travel with the housing partially closed (not latched) with a rubber band and wrapped in a micro clothe. Whether on or off I think is less important than storage latched which compresses the o-ring or travel without the o-ring in place which could lead to damage of the grooves which hold the o-ring.

    YMMV

  3. Or just don't worry about it. A lot of people really over think this issue. Its a non problem. You can get into more trouble playing with your o-ring too often than just leaving it alone.

  4. Agreed! A little bit goes a long way. I typically grease my o-ring once at the beginning of a dive trip and then just inspect it when opening and closing.
