Has Anyone been to Grenada??

9 posts
  1. Hi Guys,

I have just booked a 2 week trip to Grenada in September. Planning on doing lots of diving but also want to see the sights as well. I am going with my brother and we are staying at the Flamboyant.

I was wondering if anyone has stayed here before or dived Grenada. Does anyone have any recommended dives or places to visit, any must do's?? I dived in Tobago last year which was good, im expecting simular diversity but im guessing different water conditions?

    Thanks,

    Mark

  2. Mark -

I went to Grenada in 2005 for Scuba Diving Magazine and dove with Aquanauts (who were great). We dove wrecks every day, which was a lot of fun (and different than what I normally do).

I enjoyed also a visit to a local chocolate factory which was trying to get off of the grid by installing solar panels. They were eclectic, and it was fun to see all the old machines they use.

If you go to Aquanauts, say hi to Peter and Gerlinda for me!

  3. Hi,

That sounds interesting ive read that there are various different places like that you can visit, I beleive you can visit the sugar cane farms and the rum distileries as well. We are planning on using the diving operator which is in the hotel, Dive Grenada I think they are called. From what ive read after a google search they seem to be quite good are are based on the main beach in Grenada, I think...?

What are the recks like there, am I right in saying that there are some pretty good ones? im also taking my point and shoot with me in the hope of getting some nice macro shots?

  4. I've been twice and dived with Aquanauts, Scuba Teck, and Dive Grenada, and over to Carriacou with Carriacou Silver Diving for 1 1/2 days. All were good, each rather different. On Grenada most were wrecks or a mix of a reef and wreck. The reefs seemed in reasonably good condition, no big walls more level with a good mix of critters. Carriacou had reefs only, but with steeper terrain.

Aquanauts is the big outfit; a number of larger good boats but slightly more tourist oriented because of this. Dive Grenada, bottom of the Flamboyant, is a smaller operation so depending on the day dives could last longer as more personal. They are on Grand Anse beach and sometimes have cruse ship guests who need to make it back to the ship. Scuba Teck were the most personal (I was even allowed to borrow Rob's rebreather for one day) as both small and a little more isolated to reach but Rob Bryant has sold the business and I don't know the new owners.

As for other things. A car is incredibly useful and simply explore, the north of the Island is different from the more popular south, the mountains different again. The people are very friendly. I certainly enjoyed my stays including in the Flamboyant.

  5. Hi,

Thanks for the insight, I thing we were planning on possibly hiring a car for the second week or something like that after we have had a good bit of diving, and like you say just going off and exploring the island! When I was in Tobago it seemed that the only map of the island was a simplified tourist map with all the main attractions and all of the roads on there which was very simple to follow. Hopefully there will be something simular for Grenada!

Sounds like we have made a good choice of hotel, we havent as yet booked the diving so we are still open to suggestions really, were going to wait till we get there to arrange that. I chose the flamboyant based on good reviews, location and good reviews for the dive shop as well.

I hadnt realised there was so many recks out there, I knew there was a few.

Cant wait to get out there and explore, its been a while since ive dived as well so looking forward to getting back in the water!

  6. Mark,

You won't find the diversity that you had in Tobago.

I know Peter and Gerlinde at Aquanauts, they run a tight ship!

September before last I took the Peter Hughes Wind Dancer live aboard from Grenada. The diving in and around the Grenadines was outstanding, maybe this is something that you may want to consider? One of the best drift dives that I ever took was on this trip -

(this video is the fist I ever made so please excuse the quality - but it should give you a glimpse!)

Grenada is very pretty, something that is outstanding given that it was completely smashed during hurrican Ivan 4 years ago.

    Hope you enjoy!

St. Vincent and the Grenadines (just up the way from Grenada).

  7. Hi,

Thats a great video, I really cant wait to go now, September is a long time away...lol I have thought about the liveaboard option but im looking forward to experienceing island life and looking around almost as much as the diving.

Im hoping to see sea horses and octopus and sharks, as those are the main things that I didnt see or in the case of the sharks didnt get a chance to see properly so fingers crossed, hoping to get some good macro shots as well!!

After watching your video I noticed one or two others showing some more of the island which also look great!

    Thanks for your comments,

    Mark

  8. I was just there in the end of Jan. and also dove with Aquanauts. The nice thing was they had two boats going each day one group would go to reefs well the other went to wrecks so you could choice what you felt like for that day. Most of the wrecks are pretty good dives. As for sharks only saw one all week when we were on the bianca which is a pretty good dive but the vis. can really drop when the current gets going. The shakem(i think thats what it is called) was also a good most of it was open for swim throughs.

  9. Hi,

It seems that most people have dived with aquantis and they are also on the grand arnse beach which is where our hotel is. I think we might consider diving with them as everyone seems to be recommending them?

Ive been looking on their web site and they seem to be very professional.

    Thanks again
