Nikonos SB 105

  1. Anyone have any thoughts about the viability of the SB 105s for digital photography?

I have two as well as a Inon Z-240 and am going to move-up to a D-300 from a D70 in an Aquatica housing. I am thinking of either using the two SB 105s in conjunction with a TTL converter, or selling the two 105s to buy a second Z-240.

For my D70 set up I used the 105s for wide angle and the Z-240 for macro. I am afraid that if I stick with the 105s without TTL for Macro there will not be enough variance in strobe power to get good results. I do like to 105s for wide angle.

Just trying to decide what to do....are the Inon strobes really that much better than the SB 105s?

  2. Hi,

I don't know if you can work with the 105 with TTL converter, at list in Heinrichs's site its not mention as one that can work with.

I use dual 105s with my D200 and really like them, if you playing with the diffusers you can have 6 levels of light - enough for me.

I don;t say I don't want sometime the TTL option but I really don't miss it a lot.

  3. Hi Guys,

As Arnon says, the SB105 Nikonos strobe will NOT work with any of the TTL converters.

It is a great strobe for manual work, and a pity that it can't be used with the converters... :)

Personally, I wouldn't sell the 105's. I would keep them for wide angle work and just

save hard to buy another Z-240. As a matter of fact, I think that there is a couple of the

Z-240's for sale in the classified section of the forums? You might like to check?

    HTH,

    Bruce...

  4. According to this site http://www.digitaldiver.net/strobes.php the Inon's have more power, better overal coverage and a shorter recycle time.....what advantage do the SB105's have for WA?

  5. .....what advantage do the SB105's have for WA?

    The price :)

  6. Haha Arnon....yes no doubt :) but I've seen the used SB105's go for around $200 apeice on Ebay so my thoughts were, sell both and then fork out a little extra for the 2nd Z240.

  7. As I understand it, the Z240's only will do TTL if you use a Sea&Sea or Heinrich's adapter. I'd rather have a strobe that has I-TTL built into it. An adapter is just another point of failure and an additional expense. I'm hanging onto my SB105's until someone gives us the features we want.

  8. Yes with the Nikon I think you have to use what Inon calls an optical D connector but the connector itself really isn't anymore fallable than a standard bulkhead connection with a hardwire cable.
