Inon UWL-100 vs UWL-100 & Dome

  1. I have a G9 with a short port and an Inon UWL-100 lens. I'm wondering what the pros and cons of getting the dome adapter for it.

Since it is not an easily changed setup, do people always leave that on? Or do they get a second UWL-100 for not so wide wide? Or just zoom in a little?

Does this make any vignetting with the G9 short port worse - or the same.

    Thanks in advance!

  2. I have the inon UWL28AD lens and have just added a dome to it.

I use this on my S70

    Pros

Excellent W/A. Can get really close to coral /fans and still frame. Therefore more detail.

I had a few marks on my UWL & sometime spots would appear on my photos if i shot toward a bright surface. Now with the dome i have not had any spots appear.

    Cons

    It is heavy

    Expensive

Like you say i tend not to switch between macro & wide now during the dive. The UWL is easy to take off and mount on a caddy. The UWL+Dome is a bit of a handful. However this may improve my photography.

  3. After installinf the dome on my UWL-100 I never had the temptation to take it out or even use the Epoque DCL-20 I also had at that time. Strictly talking about photography, I cannot think of any cons.

IMHO, the dome is well worth what you pay for it. :D

  4. Hello

I did ask the question about how long I could leave the Inon 100 UWL lense and dome built together and I did get this answer from Inon Japan :

As you can see in our instruction, there is no specific time

how long the Dome Lens Unit can stay on UWL-100 wide conversion lens.

We would suggest to disassemble them if you do not use underwater

more than one month. So ....

But I did not thought to ask them the same question when travelling by plane ... :D

  5. Can the Inon UWL-100 be used alone, without the dome? It looks very flat. Doesn’t the flat surface distort the picture? I’m planning to get the Inon UWL-100 and the Ikelite short port adapter for a Canon G9 with Ikelite housing. Am I missing something?

  6. I absolutely agree with Lyn , see previous message , and I think it's a beggining of answer for you !!

  7. If the G9 is zoomed with UWL-100, both with or without the dome unit, the image suffers from blurring arond the periphery. So I'm looking for a 100 degree look-in, rather than the 130 degress the dome unit offers, I attach a second UWL-100. I can also use UR Pro filters with the 'undomed' lens.

I've only been using the UWl-100 for a very short period; in fact, today was only the third time I've taken it in the water, but I'm very happy with the results I've had so far.

I too am contemplating adding the dome port to the lens, but because of the results I am getting without the dome port, I'm thinking I may buy another UWL-100 and add the dome port to that one, and that will allow me to exchange lenses underwater when I need a wider angle, such as when I photograph wrecks, which I often do.

BTW, with the Patima Housing and the short port, and the UWL-100, which I never zoom, I have found no blurring or distortion at all - It's an amazing lens!

Here's a few pictures I took this weekend with the G9, the Patima Housing, twin Z-240's and the UWL-100 lens.

Hi Adrian, thats my solution too.

However I find switching the UWL-100 and dome unit a fiddle with the M67 thread and is a situation waiting for a dropped and lost lens...

Also, the lens and dome is a big chunck of glass to find a home for when its not on the front of the housing.

So I tend towards diving the straight UWL-100 and UR Pro filters on the short port and I look for macro or portrait opportunities with it removed (not ideal with the short port) and popped into a neoprene bag.

    Agreed! Unzoomed its fine.
