E420 quicktime review of live view

  1. Thanks, now I don't feel quite as obsolete as I felt when I first read the 420 press release. :D

  2. TBH, isn't the "update" of Live View a fairly small improvement compared to eg the sensor, new menus and operation, remote flash control etc?

Having read up more on the E-420, with all the user reports starting to pour in, I would much rather buy one of these to house rather than getting my E-3 underwater. It would be totally sweet to have a Seatool housing for it... With the E-3 housing underway I'll keep my fingers crossed.

  3. If I were buying a new camera now, I'd probably pick the 420. I'm neither a good enough photog nor 'rich' enough to be willing to spend the cash on an E-3. I was just happy to see the 420 upgrade to LiveView wasn't enough to make me regret having JUST housed my E330. For me, LV is a crutch I'm not willing to let go of yet, but only if it doesn't cost me shutter response time.

:D I was actually thinking about your avid defense of the E330 against all new arrivals when I watched this. Yes its still the only one without shutter lag...although the 420 did seem somewhat quicker than most. It'll be interesting to see the evolution of this focusing off the sensor technology.

I'll be interested in the DPreview noise tests when compared with the E410. Might have to break out the grinder to fit it in my E410 housing ;)

I doubt the difference is huge, but early samples suggest it performs about the same as the E-3 on ISO 1600 (doesn't go beyond that). Good thing is you probably don't have to break out the grinder. ;)

    Quote from the dpreview forum:

"The E-420 does fit in the PT-E03... The grip isn't a problem and the larger display hasn't moved the rear panel buttons. The only serious problem is that the mode dial knurling has changed and it doesn't fit inside the cup of the casing control.

It might be that the dial can be swapped with the one from the 410, which would be a total fix or that some rubber or blu-tak would do the job. At worst you'd have to set and forget before you jump in."

Sounds like good news for people who already own the PT-E03. I would still want a housing with a deeper rating than 40m/130ft however.
