Another Blenny ID

  1. These were shot in the Caymans a couple of weeks ago. I can't figure out what kind of blenny it is.

    Thanks, Geoff

  2. Looks like it may be a Triplefin, but I don't recognize it.

    Cheers,

    Marli

  3. The reddish base and border on the caudal fin make it a redeye triplefin (Enneanectes pectoralis).

    Hope that helps.

    Wonderful! Thanks a lot.

  5. While we're resolving my pressing blenny identifications, here's another one that I'm not sure about. I've been calling this a Sadded Blenny (malacoctenus triangulatus), but I'm really not sure that's right. I have lots of photos of blennies with similar markings, but they don't have the distinct inverted triangle.

  6. Yes, it's a saddled blenny. You can actually see a couple of the triangular saddles along the dorsum from the midside toward the rear.

In our software we've got 13 photos of M. triangulatus, and they all look quite different. The triangular saddles may be very prominent or nearly impossible to recognize.
