Help needed with a HUGYFOT housing please

  1. I wonder if anyone can help.

I've noticed that when using my 10-17mm and 10 - 22mm lenses the gear mechanism unmeshes itself during a dive. To start with I thought the silicon ring and gearing ring on the lens was slipping down so I secured it with a cable tie, the problem is still happening though.

I *think* that even though I am making sure the two gears mesh together nicely when putting the camera in the housing, once underwater the housing gear is actually pushing the camera lens AWAY from the gear (the camera is only secured in one place in the housing where you would expect to screw into a tripod)

Has anyone else had this problem with a Hugyfot (or indeed any other housing that uses a similar attachement system) and if so, how have you got around it?

Please help, all my dives are ending up with me at the wrong end of the zoom for the photos I want to take!!!

I had a similar problem when I had been supplied with the incorrect lense gear. Since receiving the correct gear ring I have had absolutely no problems.

FYI: I install the camera into the housing first, then install the gear ring from the lense side in order to see the gear alignment and view the lateral alignment of the lense in relation to the gear.

Oh right, that's not good, especially as it happens with both my 10-17 and 10 - 22mm, one gear ring supplied wrong is a shame, 2 is stupid!!

Thanks very much indeed for the info - I was starting to think I am the only Hugyfot user in the world for a while!!!

We're not that many, I think :D But I haven't experienced the problem you describe. The only zoom I use is the Sigma 10-20 and it works without any problems so far and it's easy to mount. Hope it is a simple solution, like wrong lens gear. Good luck!

where I told of my zoom problems although yours seem of a different nature. For my zooms (17-70 and 10-17) I use the same ring (older system, not the silicon system) which fits very tight.

  6. Thanks for your replies chaps

David - a really interesting report and certainly it's a very similar peice on yours where mine is failing although I cna't see any damage yet.

I was in the pool on Friday and tightened up the mounting bolt more than usual and fortuantely didn't have the problem, although I'm not convinced that isn't more to do with only being at 2m, I can't be sure.

Anyway, I've emailed Hugyfot in Belgium and await their reply, unfortunately there is no longer a distributer in the UK which causes me a few problems but then the patience is good practise for being underwater and taking phots!

  7. Try a guy called Andy (andyf@divelife.co.uk) from Divelife in the UK http://www.divelife.co.uk/index.php?cPath=170_203 I've had a recent exchange of email regarding the purchase of a housing recently, they don't have a service centre in the UK just yet, but they will send it back to Belgium for repair (and possibly add a years warranty to the housing).

Thanks for your replies chaps :)

  8. I am a Hugyfot dealer in the states. Unfortunately, the problem you are experiencing I have not run into. The fact that its happening to both of your lenses really makes me think the camera body is not mounted tight enough to the housing, and thus with the pressure of using the zoom, the camera is then moving enough to disengage. Pascal and Tom at Hugyfot are very prompt with replies, so I would definitely send them an email, they usually respond within 24 hours.

  9. I had the same problem once or twice with my Tokina 10-17 in my Hugyfot. It turned out to be a false mounting of the gear on the lens.

This is how I do it now and it never happend again:

The rubber ring has to sit on the focus ring of the lens without overlaping on either side. To get the gear ring close enough to the gear in the housing, it must not sit centric on the rubber ring but one groove further out to the back (nearer to the camera body). Like this the rubber ring won't slip and turn off axis.

Was that explanation clear enough? :) If not I can take a picture of it :)
