  1. Hi All,

Would appreciate your comments concerning setting up this unit. It is housed in a Subal SN80.

    I am using a 70-180 lens.

    1. It was suggested to set the strobe at 24mm not use the zoom function.

    2. Should the flip down diffuser be used at all times?

    Thanks and regards

    ron

  2. Hi Ron,

I use my SB80DX without the diffuser and with the zoom function turned on and find that it is fine like that.

Setting it at 24mm will work too. It will mean that flash aiming is less critical. You will use up your batteries faster and with a wider beam you will have the potential to light up more unwanted particles in the water creating backscatter.

The diffuser will widen the beam further and use more battery power.

The great thing about digital is that however you set up your camera you will see your images as you take them and know if the setup is working.

    Best of luck,

    Alex

  3. I'm guessing. The only way to truly know is to experiment and experiment at different focal lengths.

    1) Skip the zoom. If this works, then go with it. If you don't like the results, try the zooming.

    2) I wouldn't use the diffuser. You are already losing half your power just by going underwater. You will lose another stop with the diffuser. If you aren't zooming your flash, you should be OK without the diffuser. Try it. Examine the image for light fall off around the edges.

Don't forget to let us know how it worked.
