While much of the attention is focused on Japan and her whaling practices, Iceland has again announced they will allow commercial whaling to proceed this summer, including 100 minke whales and an unspecified number of fin whales. According to the BBC, Iceland managed to sell all the whale products it caught last year, prompting them to repeat this year.
So, other than sending a ship up there to block whalers, what are the "acceptable" methods of stopping this? Here's our chance to make an impact.
It's simple economics, make it more expensive for the Icelanders than it's worth to send boats out. Boycott of their products(their biggest money earner) is one way, as is tourism boycotts. It will drive the nationalist sentiment. However, they are not the economic juggernaut like Japan, which has roots in every household in the developed world. I don't buy any icelandic products as standard and write every year stating why I won't return to Iceland until the whaling is stopped.
They caught like 10 whales last year because there was little demand. I do think the quota is there as a statement to stake their 'right' to catch and not the actual count. A lot of this is sorta like sovereignty rights vs actual kills.
