Holbox Whale Shark Trips ?

Does anyone have any experience with the day trip snorkel dives near Holbox Yucatan for whale shark encounters? I'll be diving from Playa in mid June and this seems like an interesting trip. Any advice appreciated! RickMeinig

My wife and I were there a year ago January. We had a great time. We arrived on the island just before the tour operator closed. The little golf cart taxi driver was rushing us to the shop before it closed. Of course I thought it was going to be a rip-off....you know..."you will see turtles, maybe dolphins, and whale sharks"

I wanted to be sure that we would see whale sharks and asked if he was sure..."of course you will see whale sharks"...we decided to pay the $80 dollars and make the trip the following morning..

It was FANTASTIC! Lots of boats leave at the same time and head for the same place....I thought that if we did see a whale shark it would be surrounded by 50 boats...not so.....each boat sort of staked our its own territory and there were many whale sharks in the area. The guides let 2 people in the water at a time and you get closer than you may want to the sharks....remember that they are HUGE! Like a city bus. If you can take video, by all means do so. The water is full of plankton and is green....not good vis, but the sharks are so big that you can see them for some distance. We had several opportunities to jump in ..maybe 4 turns in the water. I had an Olympus sp350 and took lots of pics before I remembered that I could take video. What fun. If your trip is anything like ours you will have a blast.
