G9 question - "Adapter" menu option

6 posts
  1. Small question for all the G9 owners out there ...

In the "menu", there is an "adapter" menu item that let's you indicate either "none", "W/A" or "Tele".

What does that option actually do? Anything?

Is there any good reason one would want or need to turn that option to "w/a" when using a w/a adapter underwater?

  2. I started off my response by writing that the menu setting is for topside use only as the Canon w/a or telephoto converters require an adaptor mount and if used, you need to specify this in the menu you found. The menu designations refer to the Canon glass. All the adaptor does is provide a mounting spacer which allows the M58 threaded Canon glass to attach to the camera.

    However, you got me thinking...

I have the Canon w/a and tele glass and adaptors so I tried both the converters and selected all the menu options to see if there are any discernable differences. I could not detect any and certainly not in the considerable vignetting which occurs when the tele converter is at the wide end of the zoom range.

Similarly, when fitted to the Ike housing I have tried the INON UWL-100 and dome unit (130 degree) with the 'WC-DC58B' setting on and off and again, there is no discernable difference.

In respect of their topside glass I'll ask Canon to explain their rationale.

    Does anyone know differently?

    HTH, Tim

  3. Thanks, Tim!

All I can think of is perhaps when you flip the 'adapter' option, it changes the EXIF template to write the fact you are using an adapter to the shooting data?

If that's the case, it doesn't write it in such a way that Lightroom can read it ... but it could be hidden in there somewhere in a slot that Lightroom doesn't see and the Canon software does.

I don't have the Canon software installed ... I'll look for the CD to test that theory out.

  4. I didn't see a difference between a foto with teleconverter attached and with or without the option in the menu.

It looks more like an option for the picture information. I haven't checked that yet.

What I haven't checked... it is if the zoom moves on its own to avoid the vignetting when the option in the menu is on... that could actually make sense.

Off topic, the teleconverter is so massive, holy-smthg!

  5. Canon advise that the only reason to designate the converter is so the EXIM data includes the correct information. Its a no brainer really. Just forget it...

I agree with you Lojo, the w/a converter is a mother, but with the speedlite 430 its my favourite combo for topside.

Damn, I must get another G9 so I don't have to keep taking it out of the Ike...

Must be in the data in a way that only the Canon software can read it. I have both the tele and the w/a and I have been using the menu option ... but alas it is not visible in the metadata in Lightroom.

I may get a second one as well. Two reasons ...

    >> Obviously nice to have a backup

    >> Bought this:

    Pistol Grip Add-on

I had hoped the ikelite case would accomodate the camera with this attached, but it won't without some surgery I'm not inclined to attempt. I will have to pry it off before the next dive. It would be nice to have a topside one with the pistol grip and a second just for underwater.
