Ikelite bulkhead in Seacam?

6 posts
  1. Hey guys. Does anyone know whether an Ikelite bulkhead will fit into the recessed space that Seacam uses for their S6 and N5 bulkheads? I'm concerned that the threaded cap on the Ikelite won't screw all the way on once the bulkhead is installed...

See here for slightly recessed bulkhead location on the side of the housing:

  2. Ryan Canon tells me "Ikelite bulkheads are threaded at 1/2" (12.7mm), and S6 bulkheads are 14mm."

He says it's would be possible with an oversized o-ring and backing nut. But it sounds like the wrong way to go...

  3. Does Seacam use 'standard' S6 bulkheads or do they make their own (own thread size (threading in housing wall) and other dimensions)?

  4. Hi Eric,

If it were me I would look into re manufacturing the Ike bulkhead but make the thread 14mm in place of 1/2".

Then it becomes a straight drop in.

Without trying it I don't think there is sufficient space between the two to machine up an adaptor to go from 14mm to 1/2" and properly maintain the o-ring seats.

I would go 303 or 316 stainless myself but if you have concerns re corrosion then maybe Delryn is an option.

Messing about with O-Ring sizes to fill spaces, speaking personally again I wouldn't go there.

I don't know, but I doubt that the tread is 'custom', at a guess they are one of the fine pitch metric options. To be honest I have never met a 'custom' thread size other than is some home cooked stuff where they guy making it cuts the thread and then makes the nut to match!.

I may have not been clear - the part used by Seacam may not be off the shelf but of their own manufacture and thus may not be the same size thread (as well as other dimensions) as an S6 port made by someone else. Their N5 socket is not like any other I have seen for example. Seacam bulkheads are threaded into the housing, they are not 'dropped in' like some others (these others are held in place by a nut). The bulkhead itself is threaded and the hole through the housing wall is threaded to match.

  6. Yeah, if I have to do some cable magic, I'll probably just put an S6 connector at the end of the cable instead of re-manufacturing an Ike bulkhead to fit.

Someone needs to do a custom remote solution for all of the major rigs out there. Aquatica and Seacam have great solutions, but I want third party solutions out there so there is competition. :)
