I can only comment on Lankayan, but my experience is a bit dated (2002) and it was before I started to get into u/w photography.

Beautiful little island ringed by white sand. You could walk around it in 20min or so. Room wise, we had one of the huts near the beach. Basic huts, nothing fancy unless they have made renovations. I think we were the only non photographers there. Very popular for macro. Excellent service and friendly staff.

Food-wise, I recall it being pretty good - I think buffet style. Baby black tips in large numbers would come in next to the main deck in the evening.

Diving wise, while the websites alway pump up the whale sharks, the impression I got was that they rarely actually get sighted... The reefs and fishlife is great and there are a couple of small wrecks in the area.

I believe they're run by the same company as the Sipidan Kapalai Resort.

firstly i suggest you do a search on wetpixel and see what comes up . there was a trip report on layang Layang recently that is quite comprehensive and would be helpfull.

what i can share re Layang Layang is .

Accom the rooms are nice probally about 3.5 star , the bathrooms are clean but getting a bit old . the rooms are well laid out and spacious, beds comfy . there were plenty of tables to set up your camera gear. rooms were cleaned well daily A/C works well . very nice pool area and bar

food i really enjoyed the food , plenty of it , great curries , my wife is a vego and they did special meals for her . you wont go hungry .

diveing and sea life . layang has great dramatic drop offs and sloping reefs in other locations , coral is clean , big sponges. big fans undamaged unspoilt reefs , at times they have hammerheads but i diddent see any . if you really apreciate unspoilt pristene reefs and great wall with color everywhere go to layang layang . diving was done out of fiberglass cats with twin 4/ outboards so the boats were stable and not smoky with a fairly short boat trip to most sites.3 boat dives a day and a jetty dive in the evening if your keen , i did all the boat dives and most jetty dives .

value because we loved layang so much and really enjoyed the diving , food , resort and staff i came away from my trip to layang layang happy . to me thats good value for my money. ill be going again in July for my 3rd time in 3 years
