I've got a shrimp \ prawn that needs IDing if anyone can help? we found it in a number of trawls from the North Minch, in the sea area to the west of Lewis (Outer Hebrides, Scotland, UK) in a depth of approximately 100-120m. They were caught in demersal trawl gear while fishing for Nephrops, but I don't have the right keys to ID them. Can anyone suggest what they are please?
Maybe some of our more knowledgeable UK members can help. I doubt that this particular shrimp is in any of local UW guide books because of the size and habitat. Incidentally, it was probably transparent when alive. Shrimp flesh typically turns white as they die.
Hi Zan
Like Leslie says, this is going to be tough because of where it was caught etc. I think a lot of these species are very difficult to tell apart without a detailed examination.
I would suggest you put an enquiry on Glaucous - http://uk.groups.yahoo.com/group/Glaucus/ - there is a whole body of knowledgeable UK experts who follow this site and you might get a response.
Best of luck
thanks guys. I'll keep an eye out and see if I can get any more ideas
Zan
Hi Zan --
Sammy De Grave from the Oxford Museum says your shrimp is in the genus Pasiphaea, probably P. silvado.
that's amazing Leslie, even if you dont know a species, you know somebody who does.
