Nikon 17-55mm with Canon 500D for Macro

  1. Hello.

I wonder if anyone tries before the following setup: Nikon 17-55 with Canon 500D in front of it?

I want to try this setup tomorrow morning and any tip will be appreciate. I currently don’t have 60 mm Macro and thought to give it a try. As the 105 is way to extreme macro to where I plan to dive Mediterranean Sea.

what I can see when install it on the Sea&Sea housing with Macro 105 Port with the Ext 22 mm that it fit. Above water i can focus upto 50-60 CM ~2 feet with Nikon D300 (crop).

    Thanks

    Gadi

  2. I imagine that you already have the lens, so this advice may not be that helpful. I use a similar combination, but on the much closer focusing Sigma 17-70mm. This focuses right on the port.

Very useful in low viz. I took this picture with it with the lens zoomed to 34mm (sort of like a 34mm macro lens):

So I think your experiment will work, but the closer focusing Sigma 17-70mm might have been a better choice of lens.

  3. Hi Alex,

When you are using this combination (lens plus 500D) are you behind a dome or flat port?

I have started to use the Olympus 12 to 60 (24 to 120 mm 35 equv.) which will focus to about the same distance (25 cm v. 20) but behind a 170 mm port with 60 mm extension port.

If you are using a flat port at what point is the wide angle end no longer useful?

    Hey Phil,

Dome port - but a small one - 4". I think a flat port would get pretty ugly in the corners at these wide focal lengths.
