Seeking Cancun / Cozumel first time trip advice

4 posts
  1. So heres my story: my wife's brother is getting married in February 2009 at a resort in Cancun. Not sure which resort at this time, but I here either a resort in the Maya Rivera, or one nearer to Cancun.

My wife and I are experienced, seasoned divers, we are into taking video, and have dove many other islands in the Caribbean, but this is our first trip to the Cancun area.

The first half of our trip will be occupied with family, wedding things.. but the latter half, its time to do some diving!

Whats it like? I heard diving in Cancun is drift diving. True?

Any advice how we should dive the region? Which outfit to dive with?

I have considered spending 5-6 days at the resort where the wedding will take place, and also considerig afterwards a short stay in Cozumel for an additional few days for some diving.

Is there good diving from the Cancun region?

Is diving in Cozumel way better than Cancun, or similar?

I see that some dive outfits advertise wreck and reef dives arround Cancun area, then there are trips where they take you via a bus across the ferry to Cozumel, the do a couple of dives there for the day.

Or should I avoid this deal, and make the effort to stay at a Cozumel dive resort for a few days, if I want serious diving....

Any input is appreciated.. this will be our first mexico trip for diving.

  2. You'll definitely want to do the Cenotes while in Cancun. The Cozumel reef structure is excellent and your average vis is around 80ft. Most dives are drift dives and the current can go from mild to really moving. Dive with Martin is a great group out of San Miguel on Cozumel. If you're just into serious diving with a roof over your head the Scuba Club Cozumel is a good, cheap choice. They also have a nice muck diving area for some night dives right off the hotel. Any operator will pick up up at the dock of your hotel. The Palace, Iberostar and the old reef club are some higher end places that also cater well to their guests. As far as Cancun, you'll also want to check out the Whale Sharks if you're there in June. Its a day's journey but you're almost guarateed to find them.

  3. For Cozumel, dive with Aldora Divers and you will never be disappointed. They are a little more expensive, but well worth the money to avoid crowded boats, and what can be seen as an inattention to safety often found in Cozumel's dive operators.

  4. Thanks for the tips. Much appreciated.

I think we may be spending most of out time in Cancun.. thus, I'll have to check out dive outfits from that area I suppose.

Will for sure do the Cenotes.. thanks for the tip.
