Anyone dived Palau Weh post-tsunami?

  1. I goog'd a couple sites, looks like there are 3 dive ops nearby. It's located in Banda Aceh, on the NW tip of Java, a nice remote place. I would appreciate any input, including dive quality/quantity and logistics. If I get lucky, and go it'll be Q1 2009.

  2. You beat me to the punch, SS. I met a PT Instructor on my previous trip to Indo. He had just spent several months there and raved about the diving. His pics were pretty impressive as well. Unfortunately, I do not have his email address (Are you reading this, Jim?). Anyway, I'd definitely like to go, but I'm unsure about which resort to use? I also recall a conversation we had about pelagics being very seasonal there, so WHEN TO GO is my other inquiry. Sorry I can't be of more help. Hopefully, someone in the know can shed some light on the present situation. Cheers, David

  3. There's nothing fancy about the resorts there. Mostly backpacker resorts. The coral growth isn't all that great, post tsunami reports quote minimal damage to coral which were deep (I believe it was 50ft and deeper but I can't remember) but the resorts were affected. Seems the influx of aid workers for the area has sustained the resorts. The survey was done by Jeff Obard of NUS. The shallow corals were damaged in various amounts depending on orientation but the mangroves were badly effected. I believe he said the dive sites were not too affected. Survey was done march 2005.

The whalesharks are from Jan to Apr. The pelagics aren't that great. A couple of sites are pretty interesting include an area ( Tokong I think) for a few species of Moray eels (although it's not always consistent). I have the survey somewhere in my server.
