Zoom Gear question

4 posts
  1. I have a Sea and Sea housing and I have a great lens which is the 2.8 Nikkor 17-55, beautiful piece of glass. I want to run a zoom gear but S&S doesn't make one for that lens, don't get why not..., any recommendations for what to do?

    I got the VR 3.5-5.6 18-55 but I would rather use the good lens...

  2. First I would suggest doing a wetpixel search as there have been many articles on making home brew zoom gears, including one using just the "hook" side of velcro. For myself I found a gear with and inside diameter a little larger the the the circumference of the lens I wanted to use and filled the gap between the lens and the ID of the gear with foam tape available at any hardware store which has sticky tape on both sides. Extreme precision is just not required here .

    Regards;

  3. Cool, I will search the forums...

    I was thinking about rigging a different gear drive to the lens. But I will look around.

  4. I have a S&S housing.. for the tokina 10-17mm, we had to find a lens with a similar diameter, like the canon 17-35 (or something like that, I can't quite remember)

    anyways, I got the zoom ring for the canon lens and it fit on my lens.. try to find a lens with just a slighly larger diameter than your lens, and the zoom gear should work...

    they come with small pieces of rubber that help the zoom gear fit tight.

    someone at S&S might be able to recommend which zoom gear to try...maybe buy 2 different ones, try them and return one of them...

    just don't do diving with a loose zoom gear! if it comes off it will scratch the inside of your port, this happened to me
