Anyone who's using the EX1...

  1. Please PM me. I have some questions about workflow and what a solid setup will entail (equipment, cost).

I've seen enough about this camera to know it's time for me to start divorce papers with miniDV...

    thanks in advance, guys.

Why can't you have that conversation here for all to share? ;)

Good call Drew! This may be more appropriate for the Editing forum, but I'll go ahead and ask my questions here.

My questions focus more on this camera as a topside unit..

    1) Ergonomics? How does it handle?

    2) Intuitiveness? It only took me a destination or two to really nail the Z1U, so I'm wondering how much more complicated this tapeless beauty is. I'm assuming it's got a bit of a learning curve.

    3) Speaking of the Z1U...when shot at full res, how will EX1 footage match up to HDV footage shot on the FX1 or Z1U in editing? How difficult is it to mixed-media edit in FCP with these two units?

    4) Generally speaking, how does it handle in FCP? Everything I've researched and seen with my own eyes shows that even on a MacBook Pro, it could conceivably cut down my rough editing by about half, particularly non real-time capture.

I'm thinking of upgrading my PowerBook - which has served me very, very well over the last two years' travel and field editing - to a MacBook Pro stuffed with about 4GB of RAM. I'm thinking that and a tera of external space will make for a good in-the-field setup. I have some potential assignments coming up that will have me out on location for about a month at a time and I want to stay on top of my sequences.

How would an EX1 handle a big ole' Lacie running firewire 800?

just some of my initial questions. Thanks for all your feedback.

  5. I would be thinking of how to back up in the field as the most important thing.

You just cannot trust Hardrives with all that data if you are traveling around the place and the footage is important.

Maybe burn the raw MPEG files to Blu-Ray disks but then that takes time...do you know how long it takes to burn a 25 GIG Blu_Ray disk!

So you make up abit of time getting it into the computer but loose time making backups of all your raw footage. ;) Kind of like one step forward and two backwards.

Tapes are still the way to go for safety I recon. You could dump the stuff to normal 25mbps HDV m2t mini DV tapes for last resort failure.

  6. Stop it FX1 man.. its a shame I know but you've been way surpassed :o

Being ultra knowledgable in techno babble i'd say don't ask me.. ;) and seeing how i've had my Ex1 for over a month but have been toooo busy to actually use it thats another downer.. :(

I've spoke to Ex1 users and they have literally ditched the Z1's and use Lacie's for storage.. One said he was looking into Blu-ray but I haven't seen him since.. Maybe he jumped off a cliff with confusion..

If its mainly for topside I'd consider the EX3 !!!

The EX3 is going to be a cool cam.. but for the price you could just about purchase an

EX1 and a good housing or mate it with the Convergant Design unit for even better

    quality footage..

the main advantage to the EX3 is the changable lens... if you don't have a bunch of lenses laying around then that won't do you any good.....

I'm also understanding that the view screen on the EX3 is not removable... if this proves true then that

cam is going to be a bitch to travel with... its going to take a huge cam case
