Sponge Spawning

  1. You never know what to expect when you dive. During a dive in Indonesia I suddenly saw a sponge spawning. The event only lasted for a few minutes, but I was able to capture some images. It was the first time I ever saw this with my own eyes.

  5. That is a really lovely photo - congrats again!!! ;)

I'm really curious about sponge spawning because I've seen it a few times and I'm sure different species of sponges "go off" at different times.

Around coral spawning time at the Flower Gardens off Texas some sponges spawn but not the barrel sponges.

Then off Florida, right off Boca Raton once I saw the large barrel sponges spawning in April I believe and you could hardly see anything, and it was even during good sunlight - the water was so murky and the sponges were just shooting out spawn like crazy. Fishes seemed to be having a field day also. So I don't think those barrel sponges are tuned into the coral spawn cycle at all?

Interesting - I'd always love to learn more if anyone knows anything?? :o

    Great Photograph!!!!

  11. Right place at the right time....very nice...

  12. Looks like something needs a room- on a more serious note, I think the pic is of the female of the species (correct me if I am wrong here) The male I believe has more of a smoke like look to its offerings. A year or so ago, we saw the same thing with barrel sponges in Belize with both sexes going at it. One which I believe was the female had egg like discharge (cottage cheese like) and the males were releasing smoky discharge. As stated above, the fish were happy with each and having themselves a feeding frenzy. I unfortunately had a macro lens on so pics of the discharge only. This wide angle shot is more what I would have liked- very cool and congrats on a very nice capture.

  13. Wow I love it!
