What is the best way to store a housing when not in use? Is it best left open or closed? Port on of port off? My thinking is open and no port so not to keep the oring under presure...
With the DS-125, Battery on of battery off the unit?
Thoughts?
Hi All,

With both my Ikelite housings, I lubricate the o-rings and store in a "baggie" to keep from drying out. The housing itself I latch, but not lock though I guess you could lock as the o-rings are not inserted and will keep dust out. The battery should be disconnected from the housing with the same philosophy of o-rings applied. I keep the o-rings of the synch cords installed and also keep them in "baggies". I find the gallon storage or freezer bags from GLAD work very well, especially for travelling. I do disconnect the port from the housing to prevent any accidental damage (got grandkids) to them. Hope this helps.
Thanks - Do you have a hard case with foam cut-outs to use while you travel with it?

The Ikelite housing uses a compression O-ring for the backplate and does not really need lubing. I have a D300 housing now, but I also had the D70 housing for 4+ years. I always stored them with the O-Ring in place and the back sealed. I usually keep the ports removed and placed in a zip log bag. D70 housing is still going strong with the original O-Ring after 4 years and 300 dives on it.
When I dive locally I put the assembled system in a soft cooler bag. Car travel everything goes in a big Pelican with dividers. Air travel the housing and camera go in a rolling ThinkTank camera carry-on bag.

Thanks - What model Pel Case? Got any pictures?
Cheers
I leave the oring in place, and put the two halfes together, but I am not closing it. It sits in a cubboard somewhere.
I am afraid that leaving the oring out, the two parts of the housing might chave and damage eachother.

Not always,
The D70 housing's backplate O-ring indeed don't need lubing but the D200 need, so check the user manual of your housing.

When I first got my U/W rig I went a little crazy and purchased the pelican case for it, which is really nice, with the pluck foam and have it set up for my one camera. But having taken it on one trip and seeing that 25 lb. container taking a lot of my travel weight I had to come up with something lighter. Depending on where we are travelling to (No.Cal, So.Cal, int'l) dictates what container(s) we use. For storage I definitely use the case as it contains everything I need at a moments notice. I have a carry-on for my camera and housing which works just fine (a porter case with a handle that opens up to be a cart) and holds both DS-125's, housing, camera, batteries, cords, and port. Each housing is different so it may not work for you, but there are some pretty crafty inputs on how to travel so as not to draw too much attention to your gear. For int'l we try to separate between suitcases to even out the weight and protect domes and such with clothing, trying to keep like gear together if possible.
