d300 flash question

9 posts
  1. I am using a D300 with sea and sea ttl converter version 3 and dual inon z 240s in an Aquatica housing, I am unable to change my shutter speed.

When in apiture mode the camera locks the shutter speed at 1/60th second and when in manual mode the camera locks the shutter speed at the maximum flash synch speed, I would be able to change the max sync speed but the rear buttons on the aquatica housing do not seem to work at pressure. When I had the d200 I could change the shutter speed by turning the command dial, it was maxed out per the settings, but changeable below that. The d300 seems locked at that setting.

Am I missing something or is this a software quirk?

  2. in manual mode, with the flash connected, you can set any shutter speed up to the max 'flash sync speed' (custom setting E1). have you tried it out of the housing? perhaps the housing control isn't meshing with the camera.

In aperture priority, when you have the 'flash shutter speed' (custom setting E2) set to the default of 1/60th, it will lock on that speed when the scene is underexposed for the given aperture f/x. when there is more light than 1/60th at f/x, it will increase the shutter speed to compensate.

your aquatica's buttons should work at pressure, though i did have a problem with the buttons that operated the directional pad on my D200 housing. what happened was below 15ft, whenever i would push a direction, it would activate the center button. this was due to the controls being a tad to big and i filed them down (the plastic knubs inside) just a miniscule amount and they've worked great ever since. hope this helps. Cheers,

  3. That is how it is supposed to work, but does not in the housing. I am wondering if the extyernal ttl is the culprit. anyone else have that problem?

  4. I tried mine last night and the left button on the camera wouldn't work. What settings do you have on your strobe?

I'll hook it all up again this evening and give it a more thorough check.

  5. Using sea and sea ttl converter # 3 dual inon z 240 set in ttl mode, same as I used with the d200. The flash sync setting seems to be your shutter speed, the command dial does not work.

  6. Ok stupid question time but whats the small metalic disc with the 3 holes in it for?

I realize it will probably go in the connection from the S&S TTL converter to the strobe but what does it do, and do I need it?

normally, when using 2 strobes, you use 2 single sync cables when using the TTL converter, and one dual ("Y") sync cable if you don't own a TTL converter.

if your disc is what I think it is, it will allow to shoot your strobes manually, without a TTL converter, using 2 single sync cables. the small disc would go in the bulkhead labeled "converter" and cover up a couple of the connecters. without this disc, you can't use the "converter" bulkhead to directly connect a strobe.

    hope this helps,

    Thanks.

Its a TTL insulating plate. Now the instructions are quite vague on the use for it??

I assume it insulates against TTL use if you have a 5 pin Nikonas connector and want to shot manually.

Why can't this be easy? :guiness:

Ops sorry forgot to check on 'S'.

However on 'A' I did notice some strange behaviour. Changing from f3 to f20 it would stop adjusting about half way through and default back to f3 without input. I noticed this a few times and it seemed to happen whenever the preview screen turned off after I took a shot?

Once agin I'll set it all up this evening after work and play with it again.
