If in Mexico I know a couple of good places. Jeremy at Living Underwater (Cozumel) is a great dive master and instructor. On the other side of the way in Akumal is Akumal Dive Adventures (in Akumal about 1/2 hour or so south of Playa), and they have good staff also. I have been on boats countless times with both of these operations and always go back to dive with them.

  4. Utila has numerous inexpensive dive centers offering PADI Open Water through Divemaster and beyond. Utila Dive Centre (UDC) has a well-earned reputation but it is so popular that it can feel very busy and perhaps too crowded. I did my Advanced through DM at its sister school, Cross Creek. It was a mellower place and had very reasonable accommodations, and one of the best restaurants on the island is right there on the property. Really, the best thing to do is just catch the ferry to Utila and take a few hours to shop around at the dive shops and see what they've got to offer. They've all got different upsides and special deals, such as "we dive the North side every day" (weather permitting) or "three free nights at the Mango Inn". Take a look at the boat(s), chat with some instructors, ask some students how things are going, etc. It's sort of like picking a university: some places are quiet and the students seem, well, very studious; other schools feel totally casual, noisy, and boozy. It's likely that your friend will find the right place if she spends a little time checking things out and asking around.

If Mal and Sofia are still at Cabana Roatana, West Bay beach Roatan, they are terrific instructors and amazing diving.

  6. If she is going to Roatan and staying at west end, I would recommend Reefgliders.

I did a walkthru of all the dive ops in west end and talked to staff or owners of each operation. I looked at their compressors and gear, taking dustcaps of regs and generally being annoying to all. This was because I came there without my own Scuba gear (except for 66 lbs of UW photogear + my favority mask and computer...) as I was backpacking thru Central America for a month and could not carry all my Scuba gear with me. So I wanted to find an operator with really good equipment maintenance. (I also wanted to find an operator that woudl be good to underwater photographers, but that aspect probably doesn't matter to your friend. ) I was also on a bit of a information findning mission for out local diveclub that was going to go to Roatan later that year. In any case, I found Reefgliders to be professional all the way thought, attentive, accomodating and on top really fun to dive with. Their facilities were clean and comfortable and their boats well maintained and working. Owners are Barry and Sarah, and they have several divemasters who have worked for them for a long time.
