I just picked up a Sea & Sea YS-30 for use with a Canon SD700is. Unfortunately it doesn't appear that these two items will ever play well together. All the searching I've done leads me to believe that there is NO way to disable the preflash in the camera. Is this correct?
If anyone has any advice, I'd appreciate it:) I'm going to try to hack the firmware with CHDK, but I don't think there is a specific hack that disables the preflash... I think I'm just trying to stay optimistic;)
Thanks,
Spencer
I don't think there is any hope Spencer.
You should consider trying one of the "Digislaves" in a waterproof case (like one of the small pelican cellphone cases) as I know they are compatible w/ the 700is (since I have one).
I think Fisheye even makes a small housing for this flash.
Cheers
James
thanks for the response:)
but that is not the way I'm going to go. I've got a sealife strobe that kind of works;) so I have something that takes pics... I haven't given up hope on the YS-30 yet. Worst case, I slave the 30 off my YS-90 on my dslr. the whole p&s set up my girlfriend's who wants to keep the set up as small as possible...

Oh! I forgot to mention that the YS30 works w/ the Heinrich's TTL converter. You can get one of his optical slave units and screw it to the sync cord on the YS30.
Cheers

I looked into that, and it seems that the SD700is is not supported. (and those things are expensive and wouldnt' get here as fast as i need it...) oh well...

I think it's the H-W Digital Adapter that James was referring to. It should work fine with your camera. I have one for my coolpix P4 (which also has a preflash and no way to turn it off) and use it to trigger a YS60. The system itself works great, the weak spot in my setup is a loose nut behind the controls.
Also they're not that expensive, Reef Camera had them for $129 last time I checked.
