1 G9 + 2 YS-60's: Suggestions for connecting them?

  1. I've been reading a great deal about u/w photography for the past few months and have begun assembling a setup based upon information I've gathered on Wetpixel. Fantastic information! But I've not found anything which seems to apply to my situation, hence my questions.

I have a Canon G9...my first digital camera. I've been shooting on land for around 40 years, but couldn't find a housing for my 5x7 technical camera. I also picked up a couple of YS-60's to go with it. No housing yet, but I am leaning toward the Ikelite because of it's expandability. But in any case, I need recommendations for triggering the strobes. I've read of the Heinrich-Wehkamp TTL adapters and they seem to be an elegant solution. If I go that route, would you recommend one adapter and a double sync cord? Or should I use two adapters? Or is there another solution which you consider better?

I'm open to ideas although I will add that I prefer to keep these strobes rather than sell them and buy another sort. I bought them cheap and don't want to shell out for Inon or Ikelite strobes. Diving in general is expensive and, as I am discovering, u/w photgraphy is even more so! :)

Thanks in advance for your help!

    Phil

  2. I'm not familiar with the YS-60's - I use Z-240's with my G9, but I'd recommend fibre optics as the reliable and robust option...

  3. I took a quick look at the specs on the S&S site.

They look like they only fire via true sync cable ... if that's the case and you are set on the strobes and a G9, your best solution would likely be an Ikelite Housing and a dual Ikelite to S&S sync cord.

I think in theory you could also get a stand-alone Canon/S&S TTL converter to get TTL control, otherwise you are in manual mode only.

  4. In my honest opinion,

I would think that you are on a winner by getting the Ike housing because that comes with Canon e-TTL converter installed. You can either sell or trade or swap your two YS-60's for a couple of Ike's DS-50's or 51's and have great TTL shooting.

I know that you don't want to sell your YS-60's but a bit of homework before the initial purchase might have saved you from going down that route...

You can, as you say, get hold of one of Matthias' converters and run a dual cord for the YS-60's.

His converters work VERY well and the YS-60 strobe is an oldie but goodie...

    IMHO,

    Bruce...

    BTW...welcome to Wetpixel...

Do the TTL converters work with the G9 for sure? I don't see why they wouldn't ... but haven't ever heard of anyone doing that - prolly 'cause if you want G9 with TTL you buy the Ikelite strobes ...

  6. My advice would be to check the compatibility of the YS-60's w/ the TTL converter and the G9. I'm not sure if the strobes are compatible - I remember reading that they required a modification.

    Cheers

  7. Thank you all for your help! Regarding compatibility, the YS-60's I bought are the latest version, bought directly from Sea&Sea U.S. According to the Heinrich-Wehkamp site, they work fine with the G9 via the TTL converter without modification.

I agree that it would have been perhaps better to go the full Ikelite route, but funds are limited. So I have to make a sort of piecemeal approach. Before I invest more on strobes, I want to see if this setup will perform well enough. I can sell these strobes at a profit if it doesn't work well.

Again, thank you to each and every one who replied. It helps a great deal!

    All the best,

    Phil
