If you want to read a great book about what the ocean was like before we mucked it up, Zane Grey's Tales of Fishing Virgin Seas is an amazing glimpse of what used to be.

Funny, my Mom and I were just talking about him tonight. The Federal Gov. has finally acquired his old cabin on the Rogue River in So. Oregon and is making a historical monument of it. It's in a remote wilderness area and as final estates die off they are able to "fill in the gaps" of land ownership along the river.
I've seen it and it's not much, just a small log cabin, but apparently where he did a lot of writing.
