Nikon sb 105 worry

  1. Hi Everyone,

I have a question with a potentially expensive answer :D Will my two Nikon SB105's give me enough coverage for the 10.5mm Nikon fisheye??

I haven't used them in anger on a dive yet with this lens,(i have just gone digital), only in a pool, with varying degrees of success. I'm comtemplating thinking about two Inons instead, but only if i need to. I'd rather keep the £800 or so in my pocket.

    Thanks

  2. keep in mind that with a very wide lens, no set of strobes will cover the entire subject matter unless you are shooting a close up type of shot. The SB-105s with diffusers in place will do a good job of painting in a foreground subject. They arent the most powerful strobe out there, but you have the ability to compensate in digital with a faster ISO like 200 or 400 to compensate. Id save the money and see how they perform for you before thinking about a new strobe. Then if you are still not happy, you could replace one and use the remaining one as a secondary light source which doesnt need to be quite as strong as a primary.

    Thanks Eric,

i'm going to do more pool work to help with flash positioning. I may just turn them up some and move them right back to see how they fare.

I'm off to Sipadan in a couple of weeks, so i need to sort this out pronto. I guess i'll just have to see how they go. Like you say i could change one...

  4. Hi Milo,

    Save your money for Sipidan.

The SB105 is a tremendous strobe and a LOT of people still use them.

When U/W photography was first going digital, everyone was bemoaning the fact that you couldn't use TTL with digital and that you "must have" digital strobes to work with digital cameras! All the usual scaremongering that happens when something new comes along. If people had have waited and tried things out, then I am sure that there would still be a lot more of the older strobes still in use today.

As you can see from the frequent inquiries about TTL converters in these pages, that TTL is still not ready to be 'fully' reliable. I would stick to your SB105's and use them manually.

I wish that I still had mine... :D

  5. I have used and still use a pair of SB105s with a 10.5. If you're testing in a pool you're not going to get corner to corner even coverage if you're shooting a flat subject against the pool wall. Fortunately, that's not the nature of most uw subjects. My main gripe with the 105s is the slow recycle time. Great strobes though: rugged, reliable and still repairable.

  6. Thanks guys,

You have put my mind at rest, i'll stick with them, my only concern is not having enough power settings. I guess i'll just have to move them back a bit behind the housing.
