This raises a few questions
quote "I caught the great white using a whaler shark as bait"
Was the Whaler alive on the hook? (live bait)
Was the Great White shark killed? (as I cant see them weighing it alive)
Alternately was the whaler already dead? (by-catch)
Was the Great White tagged and released alive and the weight estimated?
Either way was it legal fishing?
It would be nice to know !
I think the question that needs to be answered is, was white shark fishing ilegal in south Africa in 2000? It would be interested if it was and what this guy then thinks of his ilegal record!

It is indeed illegal, so perhaps anyone should tell the organization that awarded him ![]()
White Sharks have been protected in several key regions around the world: South Africa (1991), Namibia (1993), the United States of America (1997), Australia (1998), Malta (2000) and New Zealand (2007). These conservation plans were not based on scientific evidence about the White Shark population, but mostly on the observed decline in the number of large sharks caught by fishermen. White Sharks have been listed on the Appendix II list of CITES in October 2004.

Here are some pictures. Looks like he killed most of them...
From another article:
He is well known in angling circles but eccentric "shark hunter" Zyg Gregorek came to national attention last year when he pledged to catch a great white shark that had been pictured off the coast of Cornwall at the height of the tourist season.
"I've been fishing for these monsters off Cornwall for ten years because I know they are there," he told one newspaper.
"It's only a matter of time before I catch this fish."
His enthusiasm may have been dampened when it turned out the picture was a fake – the shark had actually been photographed off the coast of South Africa.
Mr Gregorek, variously described as a Polish fisherman, angling club owner and winemaker, also claims to speak three languages.
At least someone has taken revenge ![]()

Is there anyway we do anything to see that this guy and others don't even think about doign this again?
Would south African authorities do anything if they knew this guy was going about bragging about being a criminal?
Well let's get real. Most rules can be bent with a lot of money. South African whities are poached, caught as bycatch and shot by newbie spearos with a trigger happy finger.
There are a few companies in Capetown and Struisbaai (Struis Bay) which actually advertise gws fishing. Here is one of them:

Struis Baai is off Cape Agulhas and a known great white stomping ground.
On the website for Sea Shepherd it asks for information about ilegal fishing. Would these operators be something Paul Watson should go after? Someone needs to...
