I have been asked by a client to ID what kind of filter feeder this is. Its a macro image of the structure that was about 5cm long - occuring in about 10m, in temperate marine waters in Western Port Bay, Victoria. Im thinking ascidian? Happy to be proved or told im wrong though. Cheers for your help
Yep, it's a kind of encrusting tunicate, probably in the genus Botryllus!
So many people miss out on these gorgeous patterns, the idea is try and wait for a small fish to land on them. Now that's what I call negative space!
Thanks Graham - the patterns and colours on this example were wonderful. I found it because I was diving in very bad visibility and could only shoot macro.
A little fish or crustacean sitting on top of this would make an excellent photo.
Now you know you find when you have to, due to limited viz as on this accasion. Try diving as if there was limited viz on any dive with your macro lens on... really start looking and you'll find lots of these beauties!
Go forth and enjoy the real macro wonders, they really are never ending!!!
