Suggestion for posting photos

  1. I have many images that look fantastic on the web but do not stand up to scrutiny when printed, or when viewed at 100%. I'd like to suggest posting 100% crops of the processed images, so readers can get an idea of the quality of different digicams at full resolution.

    For example:

    20030106_151648_1.jpg

and a 100% crop of the 6mp image (no interpolation):

and, if I had one, I'd probably post a crop of the up-res'ed version.

    Thoughts?

  2. It would be useful when you want to demonstrate the quality you are achieving. It might be interesting if there was a gallery of sample images organized by camera. I haven't seen such a gallery before. Showing a crop of an upconverted file seems less interesting.

Your crop would qualify as macro in some circles!

  3. I agree that being able to see 100% crops would be both interesting and useful. However, strictly speaking I wouldn't agree with "of the quality of different digicams at full resolution", unless you meant comparing best-of-best shots between different digicams. That is, the quality of 100% crops is dependent on so many other issues than digicam alone...

Yes, that is right. I agree with what you have written. So, quality my statement with "of the quality of different digicams at full resolution -- assuming that the shot has been properly executed."

100% crops also show the quality of the image for use other than on the web. My own philosophy: I try not to post images that are great at web resolutions and poor at print resolutions because I'm not proud of those photos. I like prints.

Yeah. That would take some work -- especially if it were to be integrated into the forum. But a stand-alone gallery with user login and submission wouldn't be so bad. I have grand visions, but I will be gone for most of the summer, so I won't have time to work on adding new features. Hopefully the forums don't wither away and die like they literally did last summer.

I love this forum software but it doesn't integrate well with other products -- yet.

...but your home pages aren't invision pages are they?

It turns out to be easy to do a gallery database. It's considerably harder to do the pages that display the gallery and harder still to do the admin pages. "Harder" as in takes time. I finished my database a long time ago but need to finish the display code. I was ultimately dissatisfied with the packages available.

They are not invision! They were coded up by hand and integrated with greymatter. And now, they are slightly static because the php I wrote was hogging server resources because the control files were just text files instead of database content.

Gallery dbs are easy, but I'd rather use one off the shelf. No time to write my own. :D

  8. As much as I use photoshop for touch-ups, I still don't know how to make a floating crop - can someone explain please?

I mean, how can I pick the size of my crop(i.e. 640x480), then move the box around to frame the area I want extracted? I'd like to see what size of a box I have to work with in the native resolution before fooling around with it...
