  1. Check out this photo. Looks pretty cool. Anyone know who might have taken it?

  5. Eric,

I knew I'd seen it before- here's the link to it on pbase

It's in an album by Sandra Critelli. Not sure if it's key west. Other pics in the album suggest it might be Holbox. There are some other good ones of the rays in there too. Would be great to get in the water with that lot.....

  6. Has someone emailed this photographr to ask whether they know about the other posting?

  7. What an awesome sight

  8. Awesome site but can you imagine the view from underneath...wow.

  9. I had a sight underwater like this once, it was in Misool with hundreds of cownose rays.... A truly awesome and most memorable dice!

Funniest thing was, there was only one diver who joined me. I'd added an extra dive as I just wanted to get back to this one site that was really going off. Josie joined me, she knows more about big schools than me, I've usually got my head stuck in the reef where as Josie works in Baha and regularly sees schools of hundreds of rays and other big critters. Anyway, this dive we went on was nuts, a big manta went by, then a couple of huge groupers, then all of a sudden I noticed something out the corner of my eye, I started to swim off reef and called Josie over, then we saw what it was the wings of rays going up and down, once we got close enough we could see a whole cloud of rays, Josie said probably 200 or so!

  10. Oh well, Eric, the Orphan Law, approved today, should protect you. Hell, sell it as your own..since it's okay to do that now...lol

  11. Graham, is that the Josie that used to work in PNG?

  12. We also have the cownose rays - school like that - right by the beaches in shallow water on the West Coast of Florida - in fact a school of about 500 swam right by and around my husband and I one early evening before sunset.

Awesome thing about this pic is it is clear water!! Of course our West Coast Florida sand is so fine the viz is hardly ever like that.

Cool pic, and yes Graham and VERY cool experience. Not rare on the West Coast of Florida at the beaches I frequent though - Indian Rocks Beach I think was where my husband and I encountered 500+ of them swimming by.

  13. We had about 100 or so off Hard To Find Rock in Komodo a few weeks ago, it's so cool when you see a sight like that.

Seeing them so close to the surface would be nice though :D Much better then 40meters!

  14. You also get to see the Devil Ray (Mobula tarapacana) in large numbers like this at Tower Rock in Burma.

  15. Graham, is that the Josie that used to work in PNG?

    Cor,

No this is dive guide Josie from Baha Adventures. She joined a private charter with some friends from Sorong to Flores through the Banda Sea. I believe Josie PNG is in the Caribbean somewhere now!

Has anyone worked out if this photo has been ripped off from someone or if it was in fact posted by the photographer who took it?

  16. In the north of Santa Cruz Island near Tortuga Negra, Galapagos, you can also see these large schools of Golden Rays.

Similar to the schools of Mobulas in Baja, unfortunately I didn't get any surface shots :D
