Just back from a dive trip to the Coral Sea. Using twin Inon Z240 strobes after two dives I changed the batteries to find that I could barely undo the cover on one of the strobes. I finally got it undone and it popped off, firing out part of the oring, when the seal was finally broken. I changed the batteries and the strobe seem to be fine, but the same thing happened again on the next battery change. After that it worked fine for the rest of the trip.
I was using new Duracell rechargable batteries. Any one had this happen before or know what has happened?
If so, they appear to be normal, high capacity NIMH but clearly they are off gassing during use. Do they become very hot? Are your Z-240s the new type III (with LED modelling lamps) as they require Eneloop batteries only.
I guess its a case of consigning the duracells to surface use only and using another brand...
Yes, off-gassing. It might be that there is some moisture getting in, or your hands were slightly wet. Even a drop or two of salt water will cause this. You might have a bad o-ring.

Guys,
Thanks for the feedback. Can only assume that there was a little moisture, as had no similar problem in the two years I have used the strobes with similar batteries.

Just bought an Inon d1000 Type 3 strobe - the dive photo shop vendor's web page cautions to use only Sanyo eneloop batteries but the Sanyo customer service people recommend against using the eneloop because of battery offgassing. Any thoughts or recommendations out there?
