Any experience with Subal SB-800 housings?

4 posts
  1. Looking to buy my first set of strobes for my d200 - and noticed that subal makes housings for my beloved sb-800's -

    What do these run, pricewise?

Would think this would save me a few $$$ over buying a new set of Ike 125's -

Anyone have any experience using these in a dual strobe config? Performance?

I'm leaning towards purchasing the Aquatica housing for my D200

    Thanks!

    D.

  2. Hey D,

You might want to have a little bit of a search for 'Fantasea' Products.

I know that they make some very good housings for the SB800 flash unit.

Check this forum for Jack Connick and have a word to him.

I got the Subal housing and while it is very nice, very sturdy and aero dynamic,

I think that they forgot to do the gold plating...I know that I bloody well paid for it... :P:P

I'm pretty sure that Jack can set you up with a dual set-up that works together, something that

is very hard to get the SB800 to do...

    HTH,

    Bruce... :P

  3. Hi Daylon,

I use a Subal housed Canon 580EX from time to time with my camera. By NO MEANS is is a replacement for a DS125 - which I also have.

The flash is much slower to recycle, not as wide, and a lot cooler color temp.

The only time I really use the Canon is when I need it's special features like FP sync, TTL for fill flash, etc.

With that said, the Subal is very nice and has a domed glass on the front - a distinct advantage for preserving the angle of coverage.

    Cheers

    James

  4. Hi Daylon,

Let me know when you are ready to buy a housing. I'll have a used Aquatica ready fairly soon. I'm sending one back to have the bulkhead replaced with a Ikelite version.

    I've got extra ports, too.

You can look at before you buy.
