Howdy from Long Beach!

7 posts
  1. I'm Greg,

I just got my Open Water Cert a couple months back. I live in SoCal and have spent my life in the water between surfing, snorkling, and compressor diving in Baja. I am really interested in underwater photography, and while a begginer, I want to purchase gear I think is good enough to grow into.

That being said, I'm looking at the DX-1G, w/wide angle attachment lens, and either the S&S YS-27, or the YS-110. It's hard to say what the bulk of my pictures will be, reg or macro, so I'm not sure whether to go with a single or double strobe set up. Any thoughts, experiences, ideas or whatever would be greatly appreciated :P

The brief bit I've read off other threads has already given me some good info...I'll keep searching. Awesome forum!

    Thanks a bunch!!!!!

    Cheers!

    Greg

  2. Hiya Greg and congratulations on discovering wetpixel and underwtare photography!!!

Im a beginner too...and here is my humble take on your queries

    1. Research your camera as best you can- check reviews on this forum- use the search facility to find posts relating to your equipment- this is a big big help!

    2. As far as I can see - Underwaterphotography is all about evolution- I feel you will always be looking to get better and better- technically, artistically, and regards 'growing into' gear- you will also 'grow out' of it until you find the right blend- simply put- dont think your first underwater camera rig will be your last one!

    3. One strobe or two? Personally- I have been using one for the last 6 years- am currently using an Ikelite DS-51- and am still learning with it. Just get the best one you can afford- the more light- the merrier- and dont forget ambient light/filter photography/your camera's internal flash- (yes you can get really nice pics with the internal flash- believe me) etc etc. too.

Walk before you run- crawl before you walk- and most imprtant of all- have fun along the way

The boys and girls in this community will help you!!

    Good snapping

Thanks for the welcome :D I've been scouring this site and others for information and reviews on the DX. Im seeing a lot of mixed reviews. Which of course just muddies the waters more for me... lol. I think your right, 1 strobe to start, just so I don't bite of more than I can chew.

  4. hey greg

    welcome to wetpixel

I live in santa monica, not too far from you. Let me know when you get your camera, a bunch of us go out on photo-oriented dives together all the time.

all point and shoots will involve some comprimise, if I were you I'd do a lot of research and see what you gravitate towards.

Dx-1G, canon G9, fuji E900, oly 8080, and some of the nikons are all potential choices.

    With the Dx-1G I'd start with 1 Ys-110.

    good luck!
