Pelican or Storm cases?

5 posts
  1. Hi all

Im trying to find a good case to house my gear.I know Pelican and Storm cases well and they are very similar.Right now im using something similar to Pelican but it does'nt lock.I travel alot so thats a problem. Now this is my list of gear i want to house.

    Sony PD 170P

    Aquacam Futura PRO housing

    External video monitor

Small Sony P8 cybershot with a MPK marine housing

    some cables and charges.

Any users of these cases with a fair knowledge of the size of gear im talking about know which model to buy

I know i may have to just go there and lug all this equipment into the shop and fit measure but humour me please.

    thanks

    Travy

  2. Travy,

You're lucky when you can find a perfect solution to gear transport. I gave up trying and made a comprimise that has worked well for me on about a half-dozen international dive trips.

My solution starts off with the basic assumption that even the best gear protection is meaningless if your bag is lost or stolen along the way, so the best solution is the one that allows you to keep your gear by your side (the only exception is putting a bag in the cargo hold on the runway - so you see the bag go on board).

With the above assumption in mind, I put my most delicate equipment in a Pelican 1510 (the largest Pelican case that can be carried on - and it has wheels) and carry the rest in a generic gear bag that has pleny of pockets and padding. This bag is also where I put heavy stuff (because they don't weigh carry ons - - - yet).

Two additional tips on gear storage:

Eagle Creek makes all kinds of small mesh and cloth bags that are perfect for cords, cables, extra memory cards, plug adapters, etc., take a look here:

To keep all those cables organized I use Velcro "get a grip" straps that are available in almost any hardware store and lots of other places - here's a link:

By the way, if you put a lock on a bag - make sure it's tsa approved so that your bag can be opened for inspection.

    Hope this helps

Thanks for the very good advice.I already had a look at the Pelican 1510 3 days ago and it does look suffiecient.I was concerned about carrying 2 many bags that include clothes and dive gear.So i am looking for just one bag to house the equipment.I had no idea about the tsa approved locks. Thanks once again.

  4. I just received a Storm iM2500 wheeled carry-on. Adorama has a special, $122.95 WITH the foam, AND FREE SHIPPING if you get the YELLOW one. Yellow may be a thief magnet, but I figured since this is carry-on, and will be with me, that ought to work for me.

It appears plenty big enough for an Ikelite housing, 2 YS-90 strobes, a port and two lenses. I plan to pu the D200 in the Ikelite during travel. I'll post photos when I get the foam cut to fit this weekend.

  5. I would use neither Storm or Pelican. I used to have a Pelican 1510, but it was just too small for my DSLR gear. It was also too heavy for the size. I switched to the Seahorse rolling carry-on. It is lighter (slightly) and bigger on all dimensions. It is still legal carry-on (if you don't weigh it!! LOL). Here are pics of the difference between Pelican and Seahorse.

Here is is with all my gear in it. The only thing that won't fit is my 8" dome port. It goes in my checked bag.

I travel with other photographers. We split into two groups to check in at the airport. One group guards the carry-on camera cases OUT OF SIGHT of the counter while the second group checks in. After they are done, we switch. I have not had my case weighed yet (knocking on wood). Worst case is that they have been gate checked. I don't worry here as I know they are on the plane and no one has had time to go through the case.
