Malaysian Airlines weight policy

  1. Recently flew with these guys from the UK to Bali. I got reamed by these guys in the past from Manila to London, never thought lightning would strike twice.

Wanted to go thru Bali as a restover before heading on to Petropovlosk in the Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia for my latest work project.

Took all the gear and was 75KG over. I knew there would be an additional fee for the added weight. It came to a stunningly easy to comprehend $7200 and change, or $96 per KG !!! Yep, this wonderful airline now have an international weight allowance, including carry on luggage, of 20KG per person!! No concessions for sports, camera, golf or any leisure equipment whatsoever. With no liaison office in the UK there is also no option for discussion with the airline prior to flying.

My solution? I sent the 75KG freight by using The Excess Baggage Company, a franchise found in many UK airports these days. The cost? $800 to Bali or just over $10 per KG. It took a week to get there and cost me Rp 70,000 to bring it in through customs which was a surprise seeing as there were HVX200's, underwater filming gear and sound equipment in the Pelicans. Not a bad result.

Last time I will spend any money with Malaysian.

    Just a heads up.

    Mark.
