How about this one, my dear wetpixies?

  1. er.....erm....

I am not looking for an ego rub...but this is my first go at posting an image of mine- which was totally ignored by judges in a photocomp. this year 2008.

There were 6 judges on the panel- 3 photographers and three videographers

I had so much faith in this foto-(I use it as my wetpixel avatar)- not as a winner mind you- but at least that it would get placed or recognised in the rankings.

It was taken on the camera's internal strobe and its a pic of a Goldsinny Wrasse- a commonly found species in Irish waters.

I was quite sad (and indeed mystified) as to why this image didnt even place- but maybe I was overlooking something (vanity perhaps??)

Please critique this one for me- Id really appreciate any constructive criticism

    Thank you

ps. The actual winning entries to this comp. can be found at this link

  2. For me, the background of this image is too distracting. There is too much detail around the fish that draws the eye away from the main subject of the photograph - the wrasse. Think how much more this fish would stand out if you were able to frame it against a black or green background.

That said, in low viz conditions it can often be worth "shooting into the reef" as the background will hide any backscatter more than a open water would.

I would also comment that compositionally this image is a bit static. The fish is just there sitting there in the middle of a frame. Even something as simple as a bit of an angle on the subject would have enlivened the visual qualities of the image a bit.

But also remember that all competitions are subjective. So when you don't win, it does not mean your pictures are bad. And when you do win, it does not mean your pictures are the best in the world. Different day, different judges, different results.

  3. Maybe a result of the re-res for the web but the eye looks out of focus a bit for me.

Shot like this the eye is the point of contact for the viewer and needs to be pin sharp.

That was my first reaction too.
  5. Sincere thanks to you all for taking time to come back to me on this

You have inspired me to try harder!!

    God bless
