D200: Help securing Ikelite dome

  1. Howdy

    I've got a Nikon D200 with a full Ikelite set-up (strobes, 8' dome etc)

I like the Ikelite unit with one exception; the attachment between the dome and the housing... it's too flimsy. Under the water (under pressure) there are no dramas and it's a very tight fit. However I am very concerned about it at the surface, it always seems like the dome is going to come off any minute.

This is a real pain when entering or exiting and I'm too scared to stay at the surface to do any under/over shots - which is very limiting

Does anyone know of a way to secure the dome more tighly to the housing?

    Thanks guys

  2. I have the Ike housing and D 200 as well. I have over 100 dives with my rig, I do back roll entries with camera in hand , dive the Galapagos in current and ride day boats in Cozumel with my camera on the deck (in a protective carrying bag I made) all with the 8" dome attached. Nary a problem......

Only problem I had was cleaning my gear in the tub in my hotel room after a dive. I inadvertently loosened one of the latches and oops. Thank goodness there was little damage done.

I felt the same way about it at first...however I generally enter the water then have the camera passed down to me to avoid any issues. At the surface unless you really smacked into a fellow diver/ladder/whale I doubt there would be any real risk of loosening the dome. It is surprsisingly flimsy though..a screw-in fitting with O-ring would seem to be a better way to go!
