Has anyone been to Fernando de Noronha off the coast of Brazil? I saw a National Geographic show on All Nippon Airways last night on my flight from Tokyo to Hong Kong and it seemed like a really cool place to visit. I loved the dolphin action but since I'm based in Hong Kong I wonder when would be the best time to visit and whether there are a lot of dive sites off the island.

Yes and the dolphins are spinners. BUT it is forbidden to swim and snorkel with the spinner pods now I believe (without a special permit that is).
The viz is great in the southern sites and fish life is typical atlantic fare. There is a nice Corvette wreck there but all the boats are pretty cattle cars. much It is a pretty place to visit IF you were in Brazil for the other great sights like the Amazon, Rio etc already but it's not a place I'd go especially for (I'm sure Jim Lyle will disagree with me on this though
) When I plan to go now, it's just for the sundowners at Ze's pool, even though there are newer more expensive and fancy places like Loronha. It's a beautiful place with great bays and a wonderful nature reserve. Great place to relax on an island after a few weeks of amazon travel, although there are many better hotels in Bahia and Rio to do that too

If you do go, book well ahead and try to avoid carnival season as it's VERY crowded.

We were there several years ago. Read here:

I'd strongly recommend getting a copy of "Terra & Agua" Fernando De Noronha by Wetpixel member Marcelo Krause.

Fernando de Noronha is probably the best dive site in Brazil with regular dive operations. But don´t get too excited about the Dolphins because it is forbidden to dive with then. You can encounter some on the dive sites around the island but it is not guaranteed. Most of the island is a national park; tourism and development are strictly controlled so you will find the island in good conditions. But this also means that apart from a few guesthouses, accommodations are very modest if compared to international standards. The weather is good year round but for diving the best time to go would be between November and June. Try to avoid Brazilian holidays because it is more difficult to find a place to stay.
Like Alex said I have a book on the island and have been there several times, so if you need any specific advice I will be glad to help.
You can see some of the pictures from the book on my website:
Alex, thanks for the input on the book, still waiting for you here in Brazil for some freshwater diving…
All the best,
