Which Inon wide angel lens for the Canon G9 (Ikelite housing)?

  1. I'm confused. What are differences between the following:

    Dome Unit for UWL-100 ($389)

    UFL-165AD Underwater Fisheye Conversion ($389)

UWL-100 Achromat Wide Conversion Lens, Type 1 and 2 ($329), which Type for G9?

    (from http://www.inonamerica.com)

Which do you recommend? Do I need Dome Unit? Why?

  2. You'll need the UWL-100 type II and the dome unit if you wish to increase the angle of view from 100 to 130 degrees. You'll need the Ike housing (or the Patima?) with the short port. Unfortunately the UFL-165 (165 degrees) is a non-starter on the G9. HTH, Tim

I currently own two of the lenses on your list (UWL-100 & UFL-165AD), and I soon plan to purchase the Inon Dome Unit for UWL-100.

First you must understand that there are two lenses on your list, and one dome which converts the UWL-100 form a wide angle to a semi-fisheye super wide angle. Also, you need to understand that the UWL-100 and the UFL-165AD are for different base mounts and are not intended to be used on the same camera.

The UWL-100 actually comes in to different models (Type 1 & Type 2). The type 1 fits certain cameras and requires an adapter ring. The type 2 is for all other cameras with 67mm threads directly on the housing (no adapter required).

The UWL-100 is a wide angle lens that will give you approximately 100 degrees maximum view angle. It's a great lens, because it will allow you to get real close to your subject, yet still cover a wide area. If you would like to get even closer and cover a wider area, than you can add the dome unit to it and it will give you in the area of 130 degrees maximum view angle. However, when using a fisheye lens, the angle can get so wide, that sometime when shooting close objects the outside perimeter of the picture can look warped.

Ths UFL-165AD lens is a fisheye lens that will allow you to focus directly up to the lens and back to infinity, but it only fits mount bases that use the AD Mount. I have it, because I also own a Sony Camera with a Sony Housing that uses the AD Mount Base. This lens will give approximately 165 degrees of viewing angle underwater, however, this lens is not really usable with the G9, because the diameter of the lens is too small and not really compatible with the G9.

I have not really looked at what requirements the Ikelite housing requires to attach lenses, but I'm pretty sure it would either use the UWl-100 or Ikelites Proprietery wide angle lens.

  4. Thanks for the answer! Is the UWL-100 a dome lens or not? It looks flat to me:

I’ve heard that flat wide angel lenses cause chromatic abbreviation. Is that a problem with the UWL-100?

Which one for the Ikelite G9 housing, Type I or Type II of UWL-100?

The UWL-100 is the one shown in the picture you posted within your last posting and it is not a dome lens.

I have no idea what a chromaic abberation is, but I assure you that, in my experience, I have found no problems with the UWL-100. I've only had mine for a very short time, but I've been extremely impressed with the results so far.

I'm not sure if the Ikelite Housing uses Type I or Type 2, but I'm sure someone on here is using it and they will be able to answer that question. If not, I'm sure you can find the contact information and email either Ikelite (www.Ikelite.com) or Inon (www.inonamerica.com) directly and they will answer your question.

I just posted a few pictures I took this weekend within another thread pertaining to the UWL-100, but I'll post them here as well, so you can get an idea of what kind of results I've been getting with that lens. All three of these pictures were taken this weekend:

  7. is there any way to attach any lenses to the standard canon housing?

  8. is there any way to attach any lenses to the standard canon housing?

If you notice the Canon port is oblong which is rather difficult to mount something to it that is round. So no as there is not a mount base made by INON nor is it threaded. This is why folks are using either the Ikelite or Patima, and I think S&S.

  9. Hi Adrian,

Your post answers most of my quetions, but just wanted to know the difference in picture quality between the two lenses you have mentioned. I have been using the Ikelite W20 wide angle lens with my G7 and got some really nice results but there is a lot of chromatic abberation at the edges. Ikelite recommends using a small port and zooming out a little, which i have done.. Considering that the angle of coverage is 165 deg and you have to zoom out at least25 to 30% to avoid abberation at the corners(which i still seem to get) the angle of coverage gets reduced almost to the Inon UWL 100 type 2 so there is no real advantage with the wider angle of view. Now my question is, as you have used both these lenses, which one gives better results ? (My W20 Ikelite wide angle got ruined recently and need to get a new lens) I am looking at getting a new one, so it would help to know.

Also if someone's been using this lens & dome unit with the Ikelite housing, any input would be useful.

    Cheers and thanks,

  10. Hello to everybody!

I'm new in this forum as you might have noticed :)

Regarding this issue, which of course interests me because I have a G9 on a DC21 case, I was wondering if you could help me.

I'm thinking of buying the Ikelite house for this camera and I wanted to know if you ever heard about this adapter:

    http://www.divervision.com/catalog/product...products_id=348

    For these INON lens:

    UFL-165AD Underwater Fisheye Conversion Lens

    UCL-165AD Close-up Lens

    UWL-105AD Wide Conversion Lens

Thank you in advance for your help!

    Hello? :D

    Anyone? :)

  12. Hello? :D

Yea I've heard of that adapter, but never actually seen one. Yes it will work with those lenses (it's made to work with Inon AD mount lenses like the ones you listed), but I'm not 100% sure if it will work with the G9 housing. Most of the Ike housings that it is known to work for list it as an accessory at Ikelite's site, but it's not listed on the G9 page.

OTOH, you can also see it at reef photo (LINK). If you scroll down to the "Customers who bought this product also purchased..." section it lists the Ike G9 housing & short port. I'm guessing it should work, but your best bet would be to ask them. The guys at reef are better than Google when it comes to UW photo gear.
