Inon Z-240 for the Canon G9 with Ikelite housing?

  1. My first thought was to get a Ikelite strobe because of the TTL, but after comparing Ikelite and Inon, I’ve decided on the Inon Z-240. It’s cheaper, smaller, lighter and more powerful than the DS-125, and it runs with batteries.

Is TTL a serious loss? Can I still connect the G9 to the Inon strobe electrically? How? What is the advantage over optical sync?

  2. The Inon's optical s-ttl is as good as most camera's built in TTL. The disadvantage of the optical system with ikelite is a way to attach the fiber optic cable to the ikelite housing. As far as I know there isn't a clean way. You can also find optical triggers or ttl converters which would work connected to the ikelite ttl port.

  3. You are absolutely correct Gary. The INON Cap Set attached to a flash diffuser is a bu66ers muddles waiting to break... I designed and built a delrin 'mask' which saddles the port blanking the throw of the onboard flash and provides a solid mount for the INON Cap Set or S & S cables. I'll try to post a image soon.

  4. Here are a couple of snaps of my custom 'mask'. As you can see, it provides a very secure mount for the Cap Set, 2 S&S FO cables and also masks the on board flash without having to resort to the INON IR tape.

  5. I ended up buying the Patima housing for G9 and the Inon Z-240 strobe, and I’ve been extremely satisfied with them.

I bought the housing and the strobe from Scubacam Singapore (www.scubacam.com.sg). Remarkable service and competitive prices! David from Scubacam Singapore gave me in-depth advice and a demonstration of the Ikelite and Patima housings for the G9. If you are in Singapore and need underwater photography equipment, I suggest you visit him.

Congratulations on your camera setup purchase!

I've been using the same setup, but with two Inon Z-240's, for approximately 5 to 6 weeks now and I'm very happy with my decision to go that route. Everytime I go out diving, I feel as though my pictures continue to improve!

Here's an example of the kind of shots I've been getting with my G9/Patima/Inon setup. I took this picture on Sunday on a Wreck in Pompano Beach, Florida in approximately 110 feet of water.

I attached the fiber optic cable from my Inon Z240 to my ikelite casing like this: http://digitalunderwater.netgoo.org/canon-...n-strobe-t3.htm

    I think it's pretty robust.

    Hi Tim,

This is the exact same idea that I had in my head for my new housing when it arrives.

The only difference being instead of the Inon F/O clamp on top, I was going to drill and tap two holes (like you have for the S&S plugs)

and install the Inon F/O windows that Inon supply with their DSLR housings.

These are very good units and work exceptionally well. I custom fitted a pair to my Nexus D70S housing. (Nexus, and a few other experts,

told me that it couldn't be done with the Nikon D70S). . . . haha, proved them wrong.

Only other thing, Tim, is how do you attach your unit to the Ike housing? Is it permanent or removable?

    Thanks Timmy, you're the man.

    With respect,

    Bruce...

  9. Feel like makin' another? :offtopic:

  10. Hi Bruce. The mask is easily removable but is also retained on the housing very securely. You'll see from the photo that the mask 'saddles' the port by a little more than 180 degrees which ensures it can't be pulled upwards. To stop any rotation and to allow easy removal I've fixed four adhesive velcro pads. These are the original pads which have lasted probably more than 200 dives.
