Modifying an Ikelite tray

  1. Before I drill and tap the tray ... and therefore expose the alloy to potentially corrosive sea water, I wonder whether I may check ... about the nature of the alloy itself? Is it marine grade and impervious to sea water corrosion? Or will I have to take steps to protect the exposed alloy caused by drilling a couple of 1/4" taps?

I sent that to Ikelite who responded:

Thank you for the inquiry. Unfortunately Ikelite does not have technical information to offer on the nature of the alloy. We suggest that you paint any exposed areas of the alloy.

Has anyone any advice to offer from experience?

Thanks in advance for your kind advice. Tim

  2. Don't worry about it mate - it may corrode a bit but will still outlast you or me.

I seriously modded mine back when I had a D70 ( so have been through D200 and now D300) see pics on my site

It is under "Ike tripod Base Mod" and I took out a fair chunk of metal when it was under the mill.

I can post you some pics of 'now' if you like - some of the black finish is gone in places but to be honest it is no problem, and I didn't treat the exposed metal in any way at all.

After a dive all I do is rinse in fresh water and dry.

I have drilled/tapped both of my Ikelite trays to install a SS chain with clear tubing for carrying and holding onto at safety stops and have had no issues to date.
