Kent,
There is very little good and easily accessible diving from Key West. Probably the best place in the Florida Keys is in the Northern Keys - the Key Largo area, followed by Loue Key further South (closer to Key West). A good small dive operation to start with in Key Largo is Quiessance. From Key West most of the decent diving is further out in the Marquessas and Dry Tortugas area.
About 2 and a half hours North of Key Largo is West Palm Beach and Jupiter areas for decent diving. Contact Jim Abernathy Scuba Adventures in this area.
In North and Central Florida there is cave and cavern diving, some good wreck diving way North in the Pensacola area, and in the winter don't miss the manatee activities in the Crystal River area.
This is a very quick summary, and if you do a search on this site you will see a number of threads on Florida diving. If you are going to Key West anyway, you may want to dive there, but I would not go to Key West just for the diving.
Hope this helps to start.
I dive in Key Largo quite often with Silent World Dive center. They are a top notch outfit, with smaller boats and great crews.
People dive in Florida? Wow. I better get going.
I was quite disappointed in Key Largo (Except for the 10 awesome dives we did at Spiegel Grove). Shallow dives, poor aquatic life and dead coral all over the place...
